There’s a lot to like about the OnePlus Tab’s screen besides just the size. As with most successful tablet designs, it’s a screen-first device that is light and easy to hold, which is probably the most important thing. On the sides, you’ll notice the power button and two volume buttons, a USB-C port and four speakers. ![]() But while OnePlus made a lovely piece of hardware, Android’s large-screen limitations continue to hamper the overall experience.īesides the screen, there’s nothing else of note on the front of the Pad aside from the landscape-oriented 8-megapixel camera for video chat. And the fact that OnePlus is also making a keyboard folio and a stylus shows they’re serious about making a tablet built for more than just watching movies or browsing the web. Instead, this tablet reminds me more of Apple’s 10th-generation iPad, in style, substance and price. As the price hints, OnePlus isn’t going right after high-end tablets like Samsung’s Galaxy S8 lineup or Apple’s iPad Air or Pro. Plenty of manufacturers have tried, but for various reasons Android tablets have never caught on.ĭespite that market reality, OnePlus is taking its first shot at this market with the $479 OnePlus Pad. Samsung has hit on a high-end formula that works pretty well, Amazon’s cheap Fire tablets technically run Android… and that’s basically it. Google itself hasn’t released one in years, though that’ll change soon with the forthcoming Pixel Tablet. This is very good for removing ads and restricting tracking, alongvwith other pestilence.I really thought we were done with Android tablets. ![]() You can choose one or the other, both, or neither. Then you go through the listed apps and √ by the internet access you want for each app or group of apps, and x by what you do not want access to the web.Įach app or group has two access points- wi-fi and cellular. The settings are pretty straight forward. I am courious if the same thing happens on a reboot with the firewall as with a VPN.Īs far as the device goes, it sets up the same as a VPN. I use it more than a VPN, and it uses the same VPN protocol as a normal VPN. If you are willing to experiment, a very simple firewall is NoRoot Firewall. I have no idea what the difference could be. What is very strange is that I have the very same device and app, yet it works fine for me.Īs I tested above, the VPN starts upon reboot, and both VPN setting remain on after a restart. I'm in a rural area, but you never can be too careful. I made sure to confirm my computer is not visible on the network, to confirm all drives/folders are not shared etc. ![]() However, it's open wifi network, no password, so I just wanted a quick, free VPN while using it. The reason I'm investigating this, is because my home DSL is down (has been for 6 days) and I'm actually using a mobile hotspot from my local library (nice that they have such things to check out). Something that I do with my smartphone (I don't use mobile data until I really have to). I haven't experimented with this VPN long enough to see how it reacts when hopping from one open wifi signal to another. So yeah, maybe it's a thing that most free VPNs don't connect right at start up. I found a few Reddit threads on which they were discussing how to change the code to boot ProtonVPN at start up. ![]()
